Theology in Painting: Illustrated walk through and theology behind the Vatican's master artworks. Featuring Sistine Chapel, Stanze di Raffaello and Raphael's Coronation & Transfiguration

C. E. Longhurst webDr. Christopher Longhurst

This presentation takes us on a visual, intellectual and spiritual journey through three of the Vatican’s most famous museums (Pinacoteca [fine arts gallery], Sistine Chapel and Stanze di Raffaello), to discover the masterworks of their celebrated artists Raphael Sanzio and Michelangelo Buonarroti. As prelude to a visual theology unprecedented in the history of Western art and religion, Dr. Christopher Longhurst, operatore didattico (lecturer) at the Vatican Museums, will present characteristics of Raphael’s sumptuous idealism contrasted with Michelangelo’s extraordinary realism, and how these two artists rival each other in style and meaning which come together in the contemporary rebirth of classical idealism and subsequent mannerist tradition.

The talk features Raphael’s Coronation and Transfiguration (Pinacoteca Vaticana), Michelangelo’s Creation and Last Judgment (Sistine Chapel), and Raphael’s Disputation, School of Athens, Parnassus, and Jurispudence (Stanza della Segnatura [library of Pope Julius II]). Longhurst will explain the details of a complex visual schemata behind these scenes, and how they complement various branches of knowledge (cosmogony, soteriology, religion, philosophy, art, law), which become accessible to the minds of children and scholars alike through the artists’ symbolic illustrations. Longhurst will also talk about how the Church used art in the High Renaissance as a powerful tool for education, edification and the propagation of religion.
